Maybe Tomorrow

Sitting at the shoreline again,

watching shorebirds feeding.

Waiting for the right words

to come in with the tide.

Perhaps they will arrive today.

Maybe tomorrow.

Shore Dance

An ever-changing pattern;

this feathered flank of shorebirds.

A living, moving fleet

dancing along the shore.

Tracking the saturated sand,

feeding at the fringe of foam.

Until, in a flashing flurry,

they flutter-fly away.

Temporary

While Willets wade
the shallow surf,

Sanderlings design
and redesign
the saturated sand,

signing their signatures
with temporary tracks,

and feeding while
the water's receding,

then leaving.
