Surrendering

Only yesterday
these leaves
danced on
slender petioles.

Caressed
by the wind,
nourished
by the twigs.

Now, the slow grip
of frost
presses upon
dying leaves.

Their short lives
spent, fallen,
surrendering
to the season.
