Cottonwoods

A cluster of Cottonwoods

gathers along the Platte River

in Nebraska. 

The prairie wind

creates a clatter

in the congregation

of brittle leaves.

I listen carefully.

Their conversation is

about the far horizon;

recalling their shimmering youth,

before roads paved the prairie.

When badgers and buffaloes belonged.

Enough

In the sunny room,
on the wooden floor,
the piano waits
for the gentle, 
knowing touch
of her sensuous fingers.

Now, she approaches.
Nearer.

Close enough 
to briefly touch
the smooth ivory keys.

Long enough 
for fingertips
to disturb the dust
accented by the sun.

Soft enough
that no notes 
were played.

Carrying her dream,
she walks away.
