Please

We are given so much
that we don't need to own.

The sky is free.
Ask the circling hawks
or the swarming flocks.

The whispering breeze
that just brushed your face;
did it speak to you?
Were you listening?

The silent, magical light
bathing the evening trees.
Have you known its warmth?

Your job is to love this world,
and to share what you've learned.
Can you do that?

Please.

Baptized

Silent as seeds
from the soil,
words emerge;

baptized

like a sacrament,

inside the soothing song

of this soft spring rain.

Vascular

In these spring trees
sap is rising up the xylem
in tiny hidden tubes
within the cambium.

Climbing against gravity,
seeking the highest heights.
earnest to swell new buds
at the tender tips of twigs.

Purposed to expand new leaves
that can gather precious sunlight
and send a new kind of energy
down the phloem: C6 H12 O6.

Promise

Aware of a poem taking shape in his mind,
he felt the presence of the Holy Spirit
looking over his humble, meager lines,
suggesting some additions, a few revisions.

Then the clouds opened,
and the stars
that were hidden
became visible.

Words appeared.
Bright with promise.

If I Could

If I could give you
the sound of the rain
falling on leaves of grass
during a warm
April shower;

If I could give you
the sound and sight
of golden Aspen leaves
trembling on their twigs
in September elevations;

If I could give you
the steady flight path
of the Great Blue Heron
rowing through the
humid air of July;

If I could give you
the gift of time
passing by slowly
in the desert,
like an invitation;

I would.
