Winter Trees

dormant, docile,
resting above ground,
waiting out the cold light,
packaged with clusters
of tough, winter buds.

patient, accustomed
to their latitude,
persevering, resisting,
moved by the wind
in their heights.

with a firm grip
in the earth,
roots probe the soil,
deeply, broadly,
alive underground.

  1. Rich: A great summation of something so profound in nature and yet taken for granted without hardly a notice by people. For me, trees are even more beautiful in the winter because of their lacy outlines on the horizon as one is driving around; also during those rare hoarfrost events, they assume a crystalline appearance that is without equal. Covered with that frost, one can spot their magnificent branching, their overall outline, and their inclination in one compass direction depending on the prevailing winds in which they have grown up! Arrows of wind direction over a long time... Fr. Richard R. Kramer
