The Show

Outlined

in the deepening dusk,

erratic silhouettes

zig and zag for insects.

Swooping in one-hundred-foot circles.

Disappearing, reappearing,

fluttering on wings of skin

just above the canopy of oaks.

It's a fascinating show, so,

watch it while you can,

before the fading light

dims to darkness;

though the show

continues

into the night,

unseen.

Bats, Crickets, & Fireflies

As this August evening cools,

a breath of a breeze

sifts through the screen

onto my head and shoulders,

brings soothing relief

after a week of humid heat.

I sigh, breathe deeply,

and continue to write:

about the bats

with their skittering flight

as dusk descends,

about the Snowy Tree Crickets

trying to synchronize their sounds

from the string section

high in the canopy of trees,

about the fireflies

flashing their yellow-green lanterns

under the darkening woods.

Reaching the Moon

Scattered clouds are dissipating
as the evening breeze subsides.
Dusk becomes a deeper gray.

Now is the time to watch
Little Brown Bats fluttering
above and between treetops;
occasionally reaching the moon.

Manipulation

Early summer wind
pushes at the edge
of these green woods,
where long branches
reach to receive it.

New maple leaves
inverted, and uplifted,
to expose their undersides.

Riding the wind,
and flexible enough
to accept manipulation.
