Given

Accept
what is given;
give thanks for
today.

Make the ordinary
extra ordinary;
and give it back
again.

Pray.

Relentless

             ocean
                            churning
                                              against
                                                               continents,

          relentless
                             waves
                                              mocking
                                                                 time...

         forever.

Strip Trees Show

After a hard freeze,
at twenty degrees,
our Red Oak trees
lost their leaves
in a November breeze.

Veteran's Day II

No words
can embrace
the immense gratitude
I feel for our U.S. Veterans
who paid the
ultimate sacrifice
for our freedom.

High Silence

A soft-edged cirrus
drifts slowly overhead.

A white feather
gliding in high silence
from west to east.

Like the last bird
of evening.

Slicing the Dawn

Crows burst
through morning fog
on ebony wings;
like blades, glossy
with blackness.

Slicing the dawn,
slashing the silence,
proclaiming their
presence.

Filled

What
God has
provided:

A long life
of awareness
and astonishment.

Fully awake.
Fully present.
Shared with purpose.

Remarkably impressed.
Abundantly blessed.
Gratitude expressed.

Cloud Music

While you read "Cloud Music", play this segment from Beethoven's 6th Symphony:

Pastoral Symphony

What kind of music
is streaming from above;
pouring through holes
in the stratus various
blanket?

Does it contain
tenderness and yearning,
filling with desire,
or late evening melancholy,
flooding with memories?

Alive
in the moment,
listening to the performance,
grateful for God's gifts
at the close of this day.

On invisible instruments
the music has played.
Absorbed within, during
this fragment of time,
this fleeting moment.

While clouds thicken
and the horizon darkens,
the cold winds of November
carry the music
away.
